"I was in my twenties. I’d depleted myself to the point that I had nothing more to give—to myself or to others. I was depressed, anxious, obese, bankrupt, and completely lost. I had pushed myself so far beyond my breaking point that I felt exhausted.
In fact, I pushed myself right out of my Survival Zone and into the place I now call the Complacent Zone, where I physically collapsed. In Chapter 3, I will explain these zones in fuller detail, but for now, just know that in this zone, which is dominated by fear, I was bedridden for weeks.
Every area of my life fell apart. Living was about trying to make it from one day to the next—often from one hour to the next. I spent all of my time in bed, drowning in negative emotions: worry, blame, resentment, depression, and anxiety, just to name a few. I had fallen into a deep, black hole of despair and self-hatred, and I had no idea how to climb out. I didn’t even know if there was a way to do that.
I remember going to therapy for the first time in my mid-twenties. It was a requirement after I’d been admitted to the hospital for an evaluation. A loved one had reported that I’d been having disturbing thoughts about taking my own life and was unable to pull myself out of bed.
As I entered the room to meet the therapist for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. I was ashamed to share my story, but I did, and what came out that evening was hugely healing. For the first time in my life, I put words to my pain and to my internal shame as I shared a glimpse of the burdens I’d been carrying. Tears and sighs of relief consumed me.
